DORMA leads the way in OH&S: (Attached is the DORMA NZ Newsletter Sep 2006)

DORMA leads the way in OH&S

A recent ACC inspection of DORMA’s factory has led to the company receiving a 15% discount on its ACC levy.
The well-organised layout of the Mt Wellington warehouse and its efficient health and safety systems impressed ACC. But according to Theo Fryer, Operations Manager at DORMA, the financial benefit was only part of why the company implemented the WorkPlace Safety Management Practices programme.

“Our new factory floor layout has improved productivity while the new systems and processes have increased performance. Plus there’s less likelihood of a work-related injury occurring,” explains Theo.
He believes customers can benefit directly as well. “The knock on effect is an improvement in delivery lead times and an assurance for customers that they are dealing with a quality supplier.” DORMA is in place to respond to urgent requests, often meeting same-day deliveries if feasible. Theo adds, ”We’ve also been focusing on improving supplier relationships. Consequently, we’ve increased our stock orders, which mean we have more products on the shelves, and can offer more competitive pricing.”
The busy warehouse stocks over 750 line items for its door control, glass fittings, automatic doors and now movable walls’ range. Each line is clearly tagged while all electrical equipment is checked quarterly.

DORMA staff undergo an in-house training programme when they commence employment, followed by regular OSH instruction, such as fork hoist driving and medical training for the St. John’s certificate. Furthermore, DORMA staff are Site Safe registered – a recognised scheme that promotes health and safety on building sites.
Theo believes this commitment to OSH provides the company with a strong competitive advantage: “It’s another example of how DORMA leads the industry, setting the standard once again.”
